This is the second book I have read by Hannah, and just like Set the Record Straight (Hannah’s Christmas novella), it had me kicking my feet and giggling.
Next of Kin follows the life of Chloe, who is a recent graphic designer graduate and receives a phone call from Rachel, a social worker with CPS, to talk about her birth mother. In the call, Chloe finds out that her mother has just given birth to Chloe’s little sister. However, Chloe’s birth mother (Constance, Connie for short) is unable to take care of the baby and has put Chloe down as the next of kin. Not wanting her little sister Willow to be placed in foster care, Chloe steps up to be her guardian. The only catch is that Chloe has a nice apartment to live in with Willow comfortably, Chloe’s financial situation is not ideal in the eyes of CPS. Not to fret because Rachel partners Chloe with Warren, who has the means to financially help Chloe until she can pass her next inspection from CPS, while Chloe also helps Warren provide a living situation for him and his brother Luke to stay until they can find a place of their own.
I love the friendship that Chloe and Luke build throughout the book! Chloe is the type of character that once you start to get to know her, you are rooting for her to succeed. While she and Warren’s relationship did start rocky, she never gave up on him, and when hardships did fall in their time living together, she was able to speak her mind and stand up for herself when his friends tried to overstep some boundaries in the home they shared.
Warren is a complicated character, and there were a few times when I did yell at him…and yes, I did yell out loud (we listen, and we don’t judge). But what I did love about Warren was the fact that he would help Chloe with Willow and the bond he created with Willow. A man with a baby <3
Like in all of my reviews, I do like to add content warnings, which include the death of a parent (off page), drug abuse and drug use, and physical violence (no characters were harmed in the physical violence)
Next of Kin does have spicy scenes within the book and I would rate them 2.5 but it was a slow-burn book, in my opinion.
If you have not read Hannah Bonam-Young I HIGHLY recommend you read Next of Kin and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
I give this book 5 stars!
